Why Start a League?
There are tons of reasons to start a Little League in your community, but the best reason is that Little League is a program that focuses not just on improving baseball skills and providing playing opportunities, but it also focuses on Character Development and teaching Life Lessons to players, managers, coaches, and families. Little League is all about Character, Courage, Loyalty, Teamwork, Good Sportsmanship, Acceptance, and most of all, Little League puts the fun back in team sports for kids. Little League is also about building community. Our goal at District 13 Little League is to help communities have something they can gather around and share life with others in the community, building a baseball program that improves the quality of life for all. Little League mandates every player gets to play, regardless of skill or ability. Little League reinforces this by having programs for kids ages 4-16 (yes Little League goes all the way to AGE 17!).
Little League also has the best training, safety, and player experience tools in youth sports. Period. With coaching training, player training, safety and health training, tournaments at every level including the only TRUE World Series in Baseball… Little League is a feature rich, international youth sports organization that has been in existence since 1938!
Simple Steps
The process of starting a League in your community is simple. Below are the steps you take to get a league officially Chartered with Little League.
- Assemble between 5-15 people to form a “Board”. These individuals would be responsible for “operating” the League. It would be comprised of positions like President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Player Agent, Safety Agent, Coaching Coordinator, Team Parent Coordinator, Umpire-in-Chief, and others. Don’t worry if you don’t know what these positions do, our District Staff will assist and train you!
- Define on a map the boundary in which you want to operate your League. It can be your city limits, a neighborhood within a larger city, or it can expand outside your town/city and encompass communities that are some distance away. It’s really about providing playing opportunities for kids and defining that on a map.
- Complete the online League Affiliation request online. It takes at most 10 minutes to complete.
- Organize an entity with the State. This is usually called “incorporation”. While not required, it is strongly recommended. Your District Administrator can work with you on this process. Most forms for this are online and can be completed in a few minutes.
- Determine which age groups you wish to play. These are called “Divisions” in Little League and they range from age 4-16.
- Find places for kids to play. If you don’t have fields, talk with your District Administrator. Sometimes they can assist with ideas and resources to find fields and facilities in which to play.
- Take registrations from players and start your season!
